Reducing distribution costs is a significant challenge for the furniture industry to overcome. In addition to compact packaging, it is now common to ship furniture as individual parts for the user to assemble. This piece represents a fusion with elements of a “musical instrument.” It draws inspiration from the “koto,” a traditional Japanese zither enjoyed by aristocrats in ancient Kyoto. The assembly uses no bolts or screws whatsoever. Instead, it applies principles from the koto—specifically, the methods for adjusting its timbre and tightening its strings—to create a mechanism that ensures structural integrity.
